Universal Design Continued Principle Three Simple and Intuitive

Posted By Gary Renick on March 9, 2009

First let me apologize for not getting back to this subject sooner. I want to continue our discussion on Universal Design with principle three of seven. Principle three is stated as follows.< ?xml:namespace prefix = o />

Principle 3

Simple and Intuitive

The building should make it easy for everyone to understand the purpose of each design feature and how to use it (e.g., providing washroom lavatory faucets that make their method of operation readily apparent and relatively easy). Moreover, its means of use should be intuitively obvious so that it operates as anticipated and, therefore, can be used spontaneously.

What more can you really say about this principle. You should be able to look at something and know immediately how it is operated. You shouldn’t have to read an instruction manual to get a drink of water or fill the tub or turn on a light. It is very difficult to say what this principle specifically has to do with handicap accessibility. But I include it as part of the whole doctrine of Universal Design.
