Don’t get me started!

The other day I wrote about people who park in handicap spaces that shouldn’t. Well that just reminded me of another pet peeve of mine. That is so called handicapped restrooms that are not really. There are several different type of what I like to call “Handicap bathroom want to be’s” . The first is those where they just put up a handicap sign and add some grab bars to a standard stall. Well I don’t know about you but I can’t use this kind of setup. First, it is usually to narrow to get my chair into. And while front transfers are possible they are dangerous to do. The second type is the restroom looks like it is perfect. Perfect until you realize the door on the stall swings into the stall and not out. Yes, you can get into the stall but you can’t close the door. This is just a matter of someone making a mistake in the installation and it not being caught in inspection. Also it is another symptom of our society not being aware of the needs of the handicapped. The last type, and to me the most irritating, is where the door to the bathroom itself swings out into the hallway, but only far enough to let an able bodied person enter becausde of some kind of obstruction. In all these cases it is just a matter of knowledge or awareness of what it is like to be in a wheelchair. I don’t know how many times, when I have made someone aware of the problems with these types of restrooms, they suddenly snap to the obvious problem. Everyday, it seems, I encounter barriers to free mobility that could have been solve if only there had been a little awareness. Until we meet again.
